GOLDEN SEAL
Golden Seal is a perennial plant found in rich shady upland woods over limestone from New York west to Minnesota and Ontario, and south to Georgia and Missouri. Because of intensive gathering, it is now rare in any of its range.
Even if rare, Golden Seal is still one of the most popular medicinal herbs used today. Externally, the powdered root is used directly in cuts and small wounds as an antiseptic aid to healing and to arrest bleeding. The powder can also be snuffed for nasal inflammation and can be applied directly as a medication for sore throat. The strong decoction is used for a wash for festering sores, skin eruptions, and eye infections.
Internally, Golden Seal is known very well as a stomach medicine. For bad colds and flu, Golden Seal tea is a favored remedy. It also helps stimulate poor circulation in cold extremities.
